week 4 - Light in the Darkness: Living as a Family of Faith in Today’s Culture

Light in the Darkness: Living as a Family of Faith in Today’s Culture

Have you ever noticed how a small candle can light up an entire dark room? Jesus calls us to be like that candle—to shine brightly in our world, no matter how dark or challenging it becomes. Today’s culture can sometimes feel confusing or difficult to navigate, especially when we're trying to live out our faith. But God gives us courage and strength to shine His love, kindness, and truth wherever we go. As a family, we can encourage each other to live boldly and lovingly, lighting up our homes, schools, workplaces, and communities with the hope we have in Jesus. Together, let's commit to being God's light, making the world brighter one loving action at a time.

Key Bible Verse (Memorize/Reflect)
"You are the light of the world… let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." Matthew 5:14,16 (NIV)

Discussion Questions
  • Young Children (3-7 yrs):
    • What is one kind thing you can do to help someone feel happy today? How do you feel when someone shows you kindness?
  • Older Kids (8-12 yrs):
    • How can you show God's love to your friends or classmates, even if others don’t? Why do you think Jesus wants us to shine our light?
  • Teens (13-18 yrs):
    • Can you think of situations where it feels difficult to be open about your faith? How can being a light in those moments make a difference?
  • Adults:
    • In what specific ways can you help your family live out your faith courageously in today’s culture? How can you practically support each other to shine your light?

Family Activity/Challenge "Light in Action" Challenge:
As a family, choose one intentional act of kindness or service to do together this week (like baking cookies for a neighbor, volunteering together, or writing encouraging notes to friends). Afterward, talk about how the experience felt and how it demonstrated God’s love. Let this become a weekly habit, reminding your family to consistently shine brightly wherever you go.
