Supporting Someone Grieving

Encouragement Devotion: Supporting Someone Grieving

Your Presence Can Bring God’s Comfort
When someone you care about is grieving, it can be hard to know what to say or how to help. You may feel helpless in the face of their pain—but your quiet presence, a listening ear, and simple acts of love can offer more comfort than words ever could.
God often uses people—just like you—to bring His healing and peace to hurting hearts. When you show up with compassion and empathy, you become a vessel of His love. You don’t have to fix anything or have the perfect words--just being there matters deeply.
Your willingness to walk with someone through their sorrow is a reflection of God’s heart. He is the God of all comfort, and through you, He comforts others.

God’s Word on Comforting the Grieving:
  • Romans 12:15
"Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn."
    — One of the greatest gifts you can give is your willingness to sit with someone in their grief.
  • Galatians 6:2
"Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ."
    — Grief is heavy, but love helps lighten the load.
  • 2 Corinthians 1:3-4
"Praise be to... the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those... with the comfort we ourselves receive from God."
    — God gives comfort not just for us, but so we can offer it to others.

Ways to Support Someone Who’s Grieving:
  1. Just be present – Don’t underestimate the power of simply being there.
  2. Listen more than you speak – Allow them space to express what’s on their heart.
  3. Offer practical help – Meals, errands, child care, or even just a note can mean a lot.
  4. Avoid fixing or rushing their grief – Everyone processes loss differently.
  5. Keep checking in – Grief doesn’t have a timeline. Continue to offer love long after the funeral.

You don’t have to be a counselor to bring comfort—you just need to be compassionate.
Let your heart reflect God’s, and let your actions speak His love.

Prayer for Comforting the Grieving

“Lord, equip me to support and comfort those who are grieving. Fill me with compassion, wisdom, and empathy. Help me to be sensitive to their needs and faithful in showing up with love and patience. Use my presence, words, and actions to reflect Your peace and hope. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
